Carilion Clinic (CC), and its academic partner Virginia Tech (VT), are recruiting a applied scientist (PhD) or physician scientist researcher in computer science and analytics at the assistant, associate or full professor level at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) to be located on both the Carilion Clinic and the VTC Health Science and Technology campus in Roanoke, Virginia. The faculty member will be based in their appropriate clinical department at Carilion Clinic and will have an appointment in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s Department of Health Systems and Implementation Science.

At Carilion Clinic, we are growing our capabilities in research to directly enhance the quality of our inpatient and outpatient care and improve the implementation of evidence-based care for our patients. The applicant will conduct research in the inpatient and/or outpatient settings at Carilion Clinic working closely to coordinate projects with the medical leadership in quality and population health. Carilion Clinic (CC), and its academic partner Virginia Tech (VT), seek a physician scientist researcher in data science and analytics. We are open to different levels of experience. The successful candidate will have significant evidence of skills within data science. The faculty member will be based in their appropriate clinical department at Carilion Clinic and will have an appointment in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s Department of Health Systems and Implementation Science.

• The specific focus of research is on using advanced computational methodologies, including the development and application of fundamental and advanced artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, or computer vision to advance our understanding of data related to improving quality of care, improving patient outcomes and integrating data driven findings into care delivery plans and processes. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to envision the strategic growth plan for data science related research and operationalize to improve quality care. Specific areas of interest for growth could include cancer and cancer prevention, obesity and metabolic disease, and cardiovascular disease. However, the position is dedicated to implementation of high-quality care, therefore need not be exclusively focused on these areas.

What We Require:

Education: PhD,  MD/PhD or DO/PhD degrees, or an MD or DO degree with significant research experience.

Experience: Significant research experience, or, if more junior, completion of a postdoctoral research experience, research fellowship or a combined clinical and research fellowship are preferred. A record of significant accomplishment of implementation research innovation and productivity as demonstrated through high quality impactful publications in leading scientific and/or medical journals as well as a record of extramural funding are strongly suggested. Physician candidates must be board-certified as they will contribute to clinical care and the training/mentoring of graduate and medical student, residents and fellows.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Candidates considered for positions at the associate or full professor rank are expected to have substantial active extramural research funding, particularly from the NIH or other federal agencies, foundations and/or industry.

Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a high-quality applied research program, build an extramurally funded research program, maintain their clinical activity and teaching if appropriate, and either maintain or develop high-profile national/global recognition as leaders in their respective fields of implementation science and medicine.
