Job Summary

The Machine Learning Engineer designs, develops, deploys, and supports production AI/ML solutions, including predictive machine learning models, generative AI, and intelligent applications, across the enterprise. Serving as an independent technical contributor within the data science department of a large public health system, this role owns projects end-to-end, supporting clinical, operational, financial, and administrative functions. The Machine Learning Engineer partners with teammates and stakeholders to independently define, design, and implement AI/ML solutions addressing business and clinical needs. Exercising sound independent judgment with minimal supervision, this highly technical role utilizes advanced Python programming, cloud-based platforms, and modern AI engineering to drive intelligent software solutions while ensuring the responsible, secure, and compliant use of AI/ML technologies. This role also drives technical excellence through peer leadership, rigorous design reviews, and collaborative knowledge sharing among a highly experienced engineering team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Translates business, operational, and clinical needs into scalable AI/ML solutions through direct engagement with stakeholders.
  • Builds scalable data pipelines by integrating, cleansing, and transforming structured and unstructured healthcare and enterprise data sources (e.g., EHR, claims, policies, operational data, imaging, and clinical notes).
  • Designs and develops AI/ML-powered applications and intelligent software solutions using modern techniques such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), large language models, agentic workflows, semantic search, and other emerging AI capabilities where appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains AI/ML solutions on enterprise cloud data and AI/ML platforms following organizational security and governance standards.
  • Designs, evaluates, and optimizes prompts, retrieval strategies, workflows, and evaluation frameworks to improve AI/ML application quality, reliability, and safety.
  • Evaluates model performance, explainability, robustness, and operational reliability using Python and related tools.
  • Supports production AI/ML services, automation pipelines, and operational incidents in accordance with established service level expectations.
  • Maintains technical documentation and version control (e.g., Git) for AI/ML applications, models, workflows, code, and operational procedures.
  • Drives technical excellence across a team of advanced engineers through strong peer influence, rigorous code and architecture reviews, and knowledge sharing. Acts as a subject matter expert, cross-training peers on emerging techniques and educating clinical/business stakeholders on AI/ML capabilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

***Experience with enterprise cloud data and AI platforms (e.g., Snowflake) and modern AI services is strongly preferred. Experience working with structured and unstructured healthcare data or in a clinical/hospital environment is preferred.**

Experience

  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience. At least 1 year of experience in Python, SQL, and Linux in support of AI/ML engineering and data analytics is required. 
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data gathering is required.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field is required. 
  • Master's degree is preferred.
